Open Play is a social Mahjong experience designed for players who already know the basics of American Mahjong. It’s a chance to practice, build confidence, meet other players, and enjoy a fun, welcoming atmosphere.

Not necessarily! We offer opportunities for both new and experienced players.

• New to Mahjong? Join one of our Mahjong 101 Beginner Lessons! These classes are designed for complete beginners and cover everything you need to confidently play your first game—from learning the tiles and the Charleston to reading the card and understanding game play. No experience is required.

• Already know how to play? Our Open Play Events welcome anyone with Mahjong experience, from players who have completed a Mahjong 101 course to seasoned players looking for their next game. Open play is designed for independent play in a fun, social setting, so instructor guidance is not provided during these events.

Open Play is ideal for players who have completed a Mahjong 101 class or have similar playing experience. Beginners who have never played before should attend a beginner lesson before joining Open Play.

No. Open Play is designed as independent game play. While fellow players may offer occasional support, there is no formal instruction or coaching during the event.

No. Mahjong sets, racks, dice, and other game materials will be provided unless otherwise noted in the event description.

If you have a current NMJL card, we encourage you to bring it. We have a few extras available in case someone forgets, but bringing your own is recommended.

Absolutely! Many players attend on their own. Open Play is a wonderful way to meet new Mahjong enthusiasts and become part of the local Mahjong community.

Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is canceled by New England Mahj Co. If you are unable to attend, please contact us as soon as possible, if someone from the waitlist wants to join, we can provide a credit to a future event.
